Wild Turkey populations in New York have fluctuated over time, with the birds going completely missing from the state at the turn of the century (1900). The New York population was replenished when some birds from Pennsylvania took up residence. Birds from the resulting population were then translocated all over the state, establishing the current nearly statewide Wild Turkey population. According to DEC Hunting Data 41,868 Turkeys were taken in New York State in 2009.
